New Appointments to English Partnerships Board

The Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott has announced the appointment of three new members to the board of English Partnerships. John Parker, Richard Harrold and Geoffrey Wright bring a wealth of knowledge and experience of housing, project management and delivering major projects.

UK Energy Statistics Published

DTI has published the latest editions of Energy Trends and Quarterly Energy Prices. Energy Trends covers statistics on energy production and consumption, in total and by fuel, and provides an analysis of the year on year changes. Quarterly Energy Prices covers prices to domestic and industrial consumers, prices of oil products and comparisons of international fuel prices.

Microgeneration Report Published

A report "Potential for Microgeneration, study and analysis" has been published by EST, Element Energy Limited, E-Connect and Cambridge University Faculty of Economics. The report was commissioned by DTI to help inform the Low Carbon Building programme and the wider microgeneration strategy that will be published in spring 2006.

Revised Nottingham Declaration Launched

The second National Councils' Climate Conference was held on 5th December and included the launch of the revised Nottingham Declaration, the voluntary pledge for local authorities to address climate change.

Scottish Executive Publish Sustainable Development Strategy

Following the publication of "One future - different paths - the UK's shared framework for sustainable development" and "Securing the Future- UK Government Sustainable Development Strategy" in March 2005, the Scottish Executive has published their sustainable development strategy "Choosing Our Future: Scotland's Sustainable Development Strategy".

UN Climate Change Conference in Montreal

The UN Climate Change Conference in Montreal which took place between 28th November and 9th December has been hailed a great success. Two meetings were held; the 11th Conference of Parties to the Climate Change Convention (COP11) and the first meeting of Conference of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (COP/MOP1), and progress was made on agreeing implementation of the Kyoto Agreement and how to take it beyond 2012.

The Government have published a summary report of the Energy Efficiency Innovation Review, which ooks at how a step-change in energy efficiency in the UK could be delivered cost effectively and how energy efficiency improvement could be embedded into decision making across the economy

NEA Affordable Warmth Award Scheme

NEA are running an award scheme 'Affordable Warmth, Sustainable World 2006', in partnership with Defra and npower. The scheme is aimed at providing grant assistance to public and voluntary bodies running innovative projects which address fuel poverty.

Yesterday the Government published their Pre-Budget Report 2005, measures announced under the heading of Domestic Energy Efficiency include additional funding for Warm Front and a Green Landlords Scheme.

Climate Change Communications Initiative Launched

The Government has launched the Climate Change Communication Initiative "Tomorrow's Climate, Today's Challenge". The £12m Initiative is a three year campaign to raise awareness of climate change and brings together efforts by Defra, the Carbon Trust, Energy Saving Trust, Environment Agency and UK Climate Impacts Programme to communicate the issues.

Code for Sustainable Buildings

The Government has announced that they will be publishing the new Code for Sustainable Buildings, as part of their response to the Barker Review. The voluntary Code will build on the EcoHomes standard and include star ratings for home buyers on the energy efficiency and environmental sustainability of new homes. The aim of the Code will be to improve environmental protection when new homes are built.

Government Announce Energy Review

This week the Government announced a review of UK energy policy, which will look at the medium and long term policy to ensure that the UK meets the goals set out in the Energy White Paper, and bring forward policy proposals next year. The scope of the Review will include energy sources, electricity generation and energy consumption.

Ofgem Publish EEC 2005-08 Innovative Action Decision Document

Ofgem has published their decision document on the Innovative Actions for the Energy Efficiency Commitment 2005-08 (EEC2). The decision document follows on from the Electricity and Gas (Energy Efficiency Obligations) Order 2004 which came into force in December 2004, and the subsequent consultation issued in April this year consultation.

The Local Authority Operational Group of the Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes has just published results of research investigating the legislative drivers of local authority Chief Executives and senior managers. The aim of the research was to provide the group with an understanding of how these drivers can be used as points of leverage in terms of sustainable energy activities.

Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill Passes Second Reading

The Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Bill has passed its second reading in the House of Commons. The Bill, which was promoted by Mark Lazarowicz MP, will require Government to report annually on the progress in meeting climate change targets, set targets for microgeneration, increase promotion of microgeneration and energy efficiency through annual fiscal policies, set up a renewable heat obligation and allow new technologies to be used to alleviate fuel poverty. Meanwhile, the Management of Energy in Buildings Bill was blocked in Parliament.
