The Carbon Trust 03.Feb.2006 The Carbon Trust is one of the two key agencies, alongside the Energy Saving Trust, funded by Government to help reduce energy consumption in the UK. The role of the Carbon Trust is to help business and the public sector cut carbon emissions, and to support the development of low carbon technologies. This article looks at what they do and identifies areas of overlap with the activities of the Partnership in promoting energy efficiency in homes. Warm Zones Evaluation Published 03.Feb.2006 The Warm Zones Evaluation Report has been published by the Energy Saving Trust. The report presents the findings, conclusions and recommendations from the independent evaluation of pilot programme, which was carried out by CSE and NEA and commissioned by Defra and DTI. Climate Change Communications Fund Launched 27.Jan.2006 A climate change communications fund was launched on the 26th of January as part of the Climate Change Communications Initiative. The fund is open for applications from projects seeking to achieve positive changes in public attitudes about climate change. Energy Review Consultation Launched 27.Jan.2006 The Secretary of State and the Minister for Energy has launched a new 12 week consultation which considers all aspects of the energy system including both energy supply and demand. The consultation paper Our Energy Challenge - Securing clean, affordable energy for the long-term asks five key questions concerning the future of the UK energy. GLA Proposes £22m to Improve London's Environment 27.Jan.2006 £22 million of extra investment is being proposed for investing next year to improve London's environment and tackle climate change. Assembly members are currently debating whether to back the Mayor's annual budget. Scottish Energy Study and Initial Findings of Climate Change Research 27.Jan.2006 The Scottish Executive has published a summary report on the first major study of energy supply and demand in Scotland in almost 15 years and the initial findings of research into climate change in Scotland over the last 40 years. UK Greenhouse Gas Emissions Figures Released 27.Jan.2006 Defra have published the first results from the 1990-2004 greenhouse gas inventory which states that the UK is on course to meet its Kyoto emissions reduction targets. The figures show that carbon dioxide emissions fell by 5.6% between 1990 and 2004, although they rose by 0.5% between 2003 and 2004. Green MSP Bill 20.Jan.2006 An energy efficiency bill was lodged by the Scottish Green Party on the 11 January 2006 at the Scottish Parliament to introduce statutory targets for improving energy efficiency in homes to combat fuel poverty and cold-related deaths. It would also require ministers to draw up an action plan to meet those targets and report to Parliament on progress. The LGA Promotes Energy Efficiency Drive 20.Jan.2006 The Local Government Association is launching a new energy saving drive for 2006 as new figures reveal that spiralling energy costs have increased the amount councils spend on fuel by up to £250 million in a year. UKCIP Publish Updates on Climate Change Research 20.Jan.2006 The UK Climate Impacts Programme (UKCIP) has announced the publication of short mid-project reports on the portfolio of research projects known as Building Knowledge for a Changing Climate (BKCC). Village Project "Going Carbon Neutral" 20.Jan.2006 Ashton Hayes, a village in Cheshire with approximately 1000 residents, is taking positive action to reduce their carbon footprint with their "Going Carbon Neutral" project. It aims to be the first small community in England to go carbon neutral. Your Opinion Webpage Launched 20.Jan.2006 The Partnership has launched a new webpage called Your Opinion this week that will give partners the opportunity to put forward their views on issues in energy efficiency and fuel poverty and discuss them with the wider Partnership and beyond the sector working groups. Energy Saving Trust Cavity Wall Insulation Marketing Campaign 13.Jan.2006 The Energy Saving Trust has launched a marketing campaign for cavity wall insulation, as part of the "Save Your 20%" campaign. Advertisements will appear in almost 100 local newpapers throughout the UK in January and will be accompanied by an advertorial. MTP Report on Sustainable Products 13.Jan.2006 The Market Transformation Programme has published a report "Sustainable Products 2005: Policy Analysis and Projections" which provides a summary of MTP's Evidence Base as at March 2005. The Evidence Base includes information on current and future use of domestic and non-domestic products, and the policies aimed at improving their environmental performance. Majority of EU States Fail to Meet EPBD Transposition Deadline 13.Jan.2006 The EU's deadline for transposition (putting EU legislation into national law) of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) passed on 4 January 2006 and was met by only ten of the 25 EU States. The UK was not one of the ten reporting states. Furthermore, of the countries who have transposed the EPBD, several are intending to delay implementing certain elements by three years. Report Investigating the Challenges of Household Consumption Published 13.Jan.2006 The European Environment Agency has published "Household Consumption and the Environment" which investigates the emerging patterns of consumption and ways to bend the trend towards more sustainable consumption. Building Regulations Seminars 06.Jan.2006 A series of half day seminars are being held throughout England and Wales between February and May to inform people in the construction industry about the new Parts L and F of the Building Regulations which come into force on 6 April 2006. Defra Publish Guide to Trusted Green Labels 06.Jan.2006 Defra has launched a guide to the trusted green labels and logos on the products in our shops. The pocket-sized guide shows the main types of environmental labels that people are likely to find on many different kinds of products from washing machines to coffee and cars to footballs and explains what they mean.
