Transitional Arrangements for New Building Regulations Tightened

The new Building Regulations are due to come into force in April 2006. The Government has now announced that where plans have been submitted prior to April 2006 work must be started before April 2007 if the new standards are not going to apply.

Tyndall Publish Report on Climate Change to 3000AD

A report by the Tyndall Centre has been published giving the results of three climate models considering six carbon dioxide emissions scenarios to the year 3000. It predicts temperature increase of 15°C and sea level rises by up to 11.4 metres with major changes in carbon emissions.

UK and Japan Launch Joint Low Carbon Society Project

A joint Japan-UK Research Project, "Developing visions for a Low Carbon Society through Sustainable Development", has been launched. This is a long term project to look at technological and behavioural changes needed to achieve such a society.

Winners of Sustainable Communities Award Announced

Environment Minister Elliot Morley spoke at the Local Government Associations annual "Delivering Sustainable Communities" conference in Birmingham on 14 February, highlighting the important role of low carbon, energy efficient homes in sustainable communities. The winners and finalists of the annual Sustainable Communities Awards were also announced at the conference.

New Energy Saving Dimmer Bulbs Launched

Energy saving bulbs incorporating a dimmer function were launched by MEGAMAN this month. Traditionally a weakness of energy savings lights, the new bulbs can even be dimmed using a conventional switch and consume less energy when dimmed.

New Grant Programme for Vulnerable Customers

Eaga Partnership Charitable Trust has launched a new grant programme to support work within a new theme of 'vulnerable consumers: multiple needs and preferences'. They are interested in the overlap between fuel poverty and wider deprivation and developing a better understanding of different groups of vulnerable and/or deprived consumers so that fuel poverty alleviation programmes, and other assistance initiatives, can better target these groups.

UK's First A Rated Double Glazed Window

Tradelink have announced their new A rated double glazed window. Whilst A rated triple glazing and non-commercial double glazing already exist, this is the first standard commercially available A rated double glazing in the UK.

Defra Publish Book on Climate Change

Defra has published a book 'Avoiding dangerous climate change' which builds on the scientific findings presented at the 'Avoiding Dangerous Climate Change' conference in February 2005, at the start of the UK's G8 Presidency.

Energy Review Stakeholder Seminar in Birmingham

Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks MP visited Birmingham on Tuesday to participate in a stakeholder seminar informing the Government's Energy Review. The event, the second in a series of themed seminars being undertaken as part of the Energy Review consultation, focused on fuel poverty and energy efficiency.

MEPs Call for 20% of Energy for Heating and Cooling to come from Renewables

The European Parliament's Industry Committee has requested the European Commission to draft legislation to double the share of renewable energy used by Europe for heating and cooling to 20% by 2020. The Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) also requested the legislation be drafted by July 2006.

NIHE Launch Progress Report on Home Energy Conservation Strategy

The Northern Ireland Housing Executive have launched their 9th Annual Progress Report on their Home Energy Conservation Strategy, which shows that the number of households in fuel poverty has reduced and there has been a 17.2% improvement in energy efficiency since 1996.
